Statement of Artistic Intent

The Greek myth of Apollo and Daphne tells a tale of a young nymph forced to take refuge from an unwanted suitor by turning into a tree.  The baroque sculptor Bernini beautifully illustrated this moment of toes turning into twigs, tendrils of hair twisting into branches.  The image of this metamorphosis has spawned a forest of stories within my imagination.

The soul of my sculptures are in the eyes; world-weary eyes that are fatigued with the frustration of daily happenings in an average life.  A minor setback, a flat tire or an unkind comment, can tap the spirit and render one unable to progress. . My sculptures are a physical rendering of what I consider to be the human condition.  Each creature I build is rooted in place, forced to endure in stillness, unable to run away from adversity or step out of the path of danger.  And within the depths of their eyes, the proverbial window, is the answer, the unattainable truth, buried under useless limbs and the imposed silence of lips sealed in clay.

There are many stories built into the walls of my sculptures.  Stories of Greek Gods, tragic heroines, eccentric historical figures, bizarre occurrences and the inanities of life fold together, held fast by lack of feet.  Essentially, however, they tell the tale of one fairly average girl, coping by means of escapism, and learning about reality by establishing a close relationship with surreality.
